# Contrave vs Wellbutrin: Why Bupropion Is in Both

**By TelosRX Editorial Team** · 2026-08-31

**Bupropion is the ingredient behind most bupropion weight loss questions, and it is in both Contrave and Wellbutrin. Only Contrave is FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Wellbutrin is approved for depression, and neither is a GLP-1 like the [telos rx compounded oral GLP-1](https://telosrx.com/pages/lp3oralglp), which is not FDA-approved. telos rx does not sell, prescribe or supply Contrave or Wellbutrin.**

It is a fair question. If Contrave contains bupropion, and Wellbutrin is bupropion, are they two routes to the same place? They are not, and both labels say why.

## Same Ingredient, Two Different Approved Jobs

Contrave is an extended-release tablet combining naltrexone hydrochloride and bupropion hydrochloride. Its [FDA label](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=485ff360-32c8-11df-928b-0002a5d5c51b) indicates it alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, for long-term weight reduction in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related comorbid condition.

Wellbutrin is a different product built on the same molecule. The [Wellbutrin SR label](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=cbc8c074-f080-4489-a5ae-207b5fadeba3) indicates it for major depressive disorder. The [Wellbutrin XL label](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=a435da9d-f6e8-4ddc-897d-8cd2bf777b21) adds a second approved use, preventing seasonal major depressive episodes in people diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder.

**Neither Wellbutrin product is approved for weight management.** That fact does most of the work. For the combination product in full, see [what Contrave is and how naltrexone and bupropion work](https://www.telosrx.com/blogs/glp1/what-is-contrave-explained).

## Bupropion Weight Loss Is a Reported Effect, Not an Approved Use

The Wellbutrin SR label does report weight change. In placebo-controlled trials, 14 percent of subjects taking 300 mg per day and 19 percent taking 400 mg per day lost more than 5 pounds, compared with 6 percent on placebo.

Read the framing carefully, because it is the opposite of a weight-loss claim. The label raises that weight-reducing potential as something a prescriber should _consider_ when weight loss is already a presenting sign of depression. It sits under adverse reactions: a change to watch, not a benefit to pursue.

**Prescribing Wellbutrin with weight loss as the goal would be an off-label decision.** Off-label prescribing is legal and sometimes appropriate, but it is a judgement a licensed prescriber makes with a specific person in front of them, not a conclusion a reader reaches alone.

## What Naltrexone Does on Its Own

Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist, and by itself it is not a weight-management drug. As [extended-release injectable naltrexone](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=cd11c435-b0f0-4bb9-ae78-60f101f3703f) it is approved for treating alcohol dependence in people able to abstain before starting, and for preventing relapse to opioid dependence after detoxification.

So the naltrexone bupropion pairing takes two ingredients with unrelated approved uses and combines them for a third purpose.

## Why the Combination Is Theorised to Matter

The Contrave label describes its two components acting on separate brain regions involved in food intake: the hypothalamus, which regulates appetite, and the mesolimbic dopamine circuit, which handles reward. Nonclinical work found the two together increased the firing rate of hypothalamic POMC neurons and reduced food intake in mice.

The label is candid about the limits of that story, stating the exact neurochemical effects leading to weight loss are not fully understood. The theory is that the pairing does something neither ingredient does alone, which is why the individual drugs are not substitutes for it.

**None of this involves GLP-1 receptors.** Contrave is not a GLP-1 and does not work like one, a point covered in [is Contrave a GLP-1](https://www.telosrx.com/blogs/glp1/is-contrave-a-glp1). For the receptor-level version of that pathway, read [how GLP-1 medications work](https://www.telosrx.com/blogs/glp1/how-does-glp1-work-mechanism-weight-loss).

## The Label Says Wellbutrin and Naltrexone Bupropion Cannot Be Combined

This is the part most articles skip, and the most important thing here. The Contrave label lists other bupropion-containing products as an outright **contraindication**, naming Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin and Zyban directly.

Taking Wellbutrin alongside Contrave is not a stronger version of the same treatment. It is stacking bupropion on bupropion, and the label treats that as a combination to avoid, not a dose to titrate.

The risk driving it is seizure. Bupropion lowers the seizure threshold, which is why the label also contraindicates Contrave in seizure disorder or a history of seizures, in bulimia or anorexia nervosa, and during abrupt discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates or antiepileptic drugs. Uncontrolled hypertension, chronic opioid use, recent MAOI use and known hypersensitivity are contraindications too.

**Adding, swapping or stopping either medicine is a prescriber decision, every time.**

If you are weighing up oral weight-management options, telos rx offers a different one: a compounded oral GLP-1 taken daily under the tongue. It is not Contrave, it is not bupropion, and it is not FDA-approved. telos rx does not supply Contrave or Wellbutrin.

## Strengths and Dose Forms Are Not Interchangeable

These products are also not built to the same arithmetic. A Contrave tablet contains 8 mg of naltrexone hydrochloride with 90 mg of bupropion hydrochloride. Wellbutrin SR comes as 100 mg, 150 mg and 200 mg tablets, Wellbutrin XL as 150 mg and 300 mg.

Those are different amounts in different release systems. The Contrave label escalates the dose across four weeks to a maintenance of two tablets twice daily. That is label fact and it is not guidance: nothing here tells you what to take. Detail sits in [how the four-week Contrave titration works](https://www.telosrx.com/blogs/glp1/contrave-dosage-titration).

## The Boxed Warning They Share

**Because Contrave contains bupropion, it carries a boxed warning for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.** Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents and young adults in short-term trials. Those trials showed no increased risk in people over 24, and reduced risk in people aged 65 and older.

The label directs that patients of any age starting Contrave be monitored closely for worsening mood and emerging suicidal thoughts. Contrave is not approved for children or adolescents, and not approved for treating depression or any other psychiatric disorder.

Wellbutrin carries the same antidepressant class warning. One more reason nobody taking either drug should adjust anything without their prescriber. If you or someone close to you is having thoughts of suicide, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available in the US by call or text. ## Where a Compounded Oral GLP-1 Fits

If an oral format rather than an injection is what brought you here, that is a separate branch of the decision. telos rx does not sell, prescribe or supply Contrave or Wellbutrin. It offers a compounded oral GLP-1: sublingual semaglutide or tirzepatide, held under the tongue for roughly 60 to 90 seconds then swallowed, formulated with ondansetron.

**Contrave has an advantage that should be stated plainly: it is FDA-approved, and compounded oral GLP-1 medications are not.** Compounded preparations are made by licensed US compounding pharmacies under federal compounding regulations against a prescription for an individual, without the FDA's own review of safety and effectiveness. Sublingual absorption is also lower than a subcutaneous injection, and the provider sets the dose accordingly.

No head-to-head trial comparing Contrave with a compounded oral GLP-1 exists, and none is cited here. The Wellbutrin figures above come from that product's own placebo-controlled depression trials, in a different population under a different protocol, and are not a comparison with any GLP-1 medication. They act on different pathways. For the format question alone, see [oral versus injectable GLP-1](https://www.telosrx.com/blogs/glp1/oral-vs-injectable-glp1-comparison) and [what semaglutide is](https://www.telosrx.com/blogs/glp1/what-is-semaglutide-complete-guide).

The service is online-first and asynchronous, LegitScript-certified, and available in all 50 states through licensed US compounding pharmacies, though formulation can vary by state. Eligibility framing is a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition, and everything is subject to medical approval by a licensed provider. Approval is not guaranteed. As of publication, the [oral GLP-1 page](https://telosrx.com/pages/lp3oralglp) lists pricing from $9 a day on the 3-month prepaid plan, with the online visit, expedited shipping and ondansetron included. That page is the authority, and pricing can change.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is Contrave the same as Wellbutrin?

No. They share one active ingredient, bupropion, but Contrave also contains naltrexone and is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults. Wellbutrin contains bupropion alone and is approved for major depressive disorder, with Wellbutrin XL also preventing seasonal episodes. Strengths, release systems and approved uses all differ.

### Can you take Wellbutrin for weight loss?

Wellbutrin is not FDA-approved for weight loss. Its label reports weight change as an adverse reaction, noting that some people in placebo-controlled trials lost more than 5 pounds. Prescribing it with weight loss as the goal would be an off-label decision for a licensed prescriber to make and monitor, not something to arrange alone.

### Can you take Contrave and Wellbutrin together?

No. The Contrave label lists the use of other bupropion-containing products as a contraindication, naming Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin and Zyban. The concern is the increased seizure risk that comes with higher bupropion exposure. If you already take a bupropion product, tell your prescriber before any weight-management medicine is considered.

### Does naltrexone cause weight loss on its own?

Naltrexone by itself is an opioid antagonist approved for alcohol dependence and preventing relapse to opioid dependence, not for weight management. The theory behind Contrave is that naltrexone and bupropion together affect appetite and reward pathways in a way neither does alone. The label states the exact effects are not fully understood.

### Why does Contrave carry a boxed warning if it is a weight-loss drug?

Because it contains bupropion, an antidepressant. Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents and young adults in short-term trials, so Contrave carries that boxed warning and is not approved for children or adolescents. Anyone starting it should be monitored for worsening mood and emerging suicidal thoughts.

### Does telos rx sell Contrave or Wellbutrin?

No. telos rx does not sell, prescribe or supply Contrave or Wellbutrin, and this comparison is educational rather than promotional. What telos rx offers is a compounded oral GLP-1, semaglutide or tirzepatide taken sublingually, which is not FDA-approved. Any prescription is subject to medical approval by a licensed provider, and approval is not guaranteed.

_TelosRX is LegitScript-certified. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are prepared under federal compounding regulations. Approval is subject to evaluation by a licensed provider; approval is not guaranteed. Individual results vary. TelosRX operates as an online-first, asynchronous telehealth service._

If Contrave or Wellbutrin is your conversation, have it with your prescriber, because only they can weigh the boxed warning, the contraindications and your history, and telos rx does not supply either drug.
