Ipamorelin half-life is about 2 hours, based on a human study using IV infusion. Its growth hormone pulse peaks in roughly 40 minutes and then fades. TelosRX explains what that number does and doesn't mean for you.

Two hours. That's the number you'll see quoted everywhere. But where does it come from, and does it tell you how long ipamorelin "works"?

Not quite. Half-life, peak effect, and duration of effect are three different things.

Below, we answer the questions people actually search, in the order they tend to ask them. Answers are written in the style our clinical team uses when reviewing protocols: sourced, plain, and honest about gaps.

One thing up front: ipamorelin is not FDA-approved for any use. TelosRX does not currently offer it. This guide is educational only.

Ipamorelin Half-Life at a Glance

Here's the quick version before we get into the details.

Measure Reported value Source context
Terminal half-life About 2 hours IV infusion, healthy male volunteers
Time to growth hormone peak About 0.67 hours (roughly 40 minutes) Same study
Pattern of GH release A single pulse, then decline to negligible levels Same study, at all doses tested
Clearance 0.078 L/h/kg Same study
Volume of distribution 0.22 L/kg (mostly stays in blood and fluid around cells) Same study
Approximate clearance time About 10 hours (five half-lives) General pharmacology rule of thumb

The Basics

What is the half-life of ipamorelin?

About 2 hours. A 1999 study gave ipamorelin by IV infusion to healthy men at five dose levels. It reported a short terminal half-life of 2 hours, with dose-proportional kinetics.

"Dose-proportional" means doubling the dose roughly doubled blood levels. Nothing unusual happened at higher doses.

What does "half-life" actually mean?

Half-life is the time it takes for blood levels of a drug to fall by half. After one half-life, 50% remains; after two, 25%; after three, 12.5%.

It's a clearance measure. It doesn't tell you how strong an effect is, or how long you'll notice anything.

How long does ipamorelin stay in your system?

A common rule of thumb is that a drug is mostly cleared after about five half-lives. For ipamorelin, that works out to roughly 10 hours after a dose.

That's an estimate, not a guarantee. Age, kidney and liver function, route, and formulation can all shift it.

Half-Life vs How Long It Works

If the half-life is 2 hours, does the effect last 2 hours?

No. The same 1999 study found that growth hormone peaked at about 0.67 hours, or around 40 minutes. It then showed a single episode of GH release that declined to negligible levels.

So the GH pulse is shorter than the drug's presence in blood. The peptide lingers. The GH spike it triggers comes and goes.

Why do people say ipamorelin works "downstream" for longer?

Growth hormone signals the liver to make IGF-1 (a growth factor that circulates longer). Researchers generally see IGF-1 as a slower, steadier marker than GH itself.

How much a short-acting secretagogue shifts IGF-1 over time in healthy adults isn't well defined in published human data. Read bold online claims here with healthy skepticism.

Does a short half-life mean ipamorelin is weak?

Not necessarily. Short half-life shapes the pattern of release, not the size of each pulse. Your body naturally releases GH in pulses, so a short-acting signal mimics that rhythm more closely than a long-acting one.

Whether that pattern matters for any health outcome in people is still an open research question.

How Ipamorelin Compares to Other GH Peptides

Half-life is one of the biggest differences between growth hormone peptides. Here's how they line up.

Compound Type Reported half-life FDA status
Ipamorelin GH secretagogue (ghrelin-receptor agonist) About 2 hours (IV study) Not FDA-approved
Sermorelin GHRH analog (mimics the brain's GH-releasing signal) Very short, generally described in minutes Not currently FDA-approved; available compounded
CJC-1295 with DAC Long-acting GHRH analog About 5.8 to 8.1 days Not FDA-approved
Tesamorelin (Egrifta) GHRH analog Under an hour, per its FDA label FDA-approved for a specific HIV-related indication

The CJC-1295 figure comes from a trial in healthy adults, which reported an estimated half-life of 5.8 to 8.1 days. That's why CJC-1295 and ipamorelin get paired so often. One is long and steady, the other is short and pulsed.

We cover the pairing in our CJC-1295 and ipamorelin research guide, and the head-to-head in ipamorelin vs sermorelin.

Timing and Dosing Questions

Why do protocols online split ipamorelin into multiple doses?

Because of the short half-life. A single dose triggers a single GH pulse. People discussing protocols online often spread doses out to create more than one pulse per day.

That's a description of what gets discussed, not a recommendation. Ipamorelin is not FDA-approved, and no dosing schedule has been validated by regulators.

Does the 2-hour figure apply to injections under the skin?

Maybe not exactly. The widely quoted number comes from IV infusion. Most wellness use involves subcutaneous (under-the-skin) injection, which absorbs more slowly.

Published human pharmacokinetic data for subcutaneous ipamorelin are limited. So the true timeline for that route is less certain than the 2-hour figure suggests.

Does food or timing change how ipamorelin behaves?

Growth hormone release in general is blunted by high blood sugar and insulin. That's why fasting or bedtime timing comes up in peptide discussions.

Specific human data on meal timing and ipamorelin are sparse. Any timing decision belongs with a licensed provider.

What Can Change Ipamorelin Half-Life?

The 2-hour figure is an average from one controlled study. Real bodies vary. Several factors can shift how fast any small peptide clears.

  • Route. IV delivery hits the blood at once. Under-the-skin injections release more slowly.
  • Kidney function. Small peptides are largely filtered and broken down by the kidneys.
  • Age. Clearance often slows as organ function changes with age.
  • Formulation. Purity and preparation affect what's actually in the vial.
  • Study population. The 1999 data came from healthy men. Women and older adults weren't studied there.

The study also noted that differences between people were larger for the GH response than for the drug levels. In plain terms, two people with similar blood levels may still see different GH pulses.

Safety, Selectivity, and Testing

Is ipamorelin "selective," and does that relate to its half-life?

Selectivity and half-life are separate traits. Selectivity refers to which hormones a compound moves besides GH.

In the original research, ipamorelin was described as the first selective GH secretagogue. In swine, it did not affect FSH, LH, prolactin, or TSH. For the cortisol question specifically, see our look at ipamorelin and cortisol research.

Can ipamorelin show up on a drug test?

Standard workplace drug panels don't usually screen for peptides. Sports testing is different. Growth hormone secretagogues, including ipamorelin, appear on the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list.

Competitive athletes should assume it's banned and check their own federation's rules.

Is ipamorelin FDA-approved?

No. Ipamorelin is not FDA-approved for any human use.

Its eligibility for compounding has also been subject to FDA review. That's why TelosRX does not offer it today.

Questions to Ask a Provider About GH Peptides

Whatever you're considering, bring a short list. These questions work for any growth hormone peptide.

  • Is this compound FDA-approved, compounded, or neither?
  • What's its half-life, and how does that shape the schedule?
  • Which labs, such as IGF-1, would we check, and how often?
  • How does it interact with my current medications or conditions?
  • What side effects should prompt me to stop and check in?

A good provider will answer these plainly. If you get vague answers or pressure to buy, that's your cue to walk away.

What TelosRX Offers Instead

If you're interested in growth hormone support, sermorelin is the GH-related peptide TelosRX offers. It works on the GHRH side of the system rather than the ghrelin side. Compounded sermorelin is not FDA-approved.

Here's how the process works:

  1. Complete a secure, asynchronous online intake about your history and goals.
  2. A licensed provider reviews it, with no live video call required.
  3. If appropriate, a prescription may be issued, subject to medical approval by a licensed provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does ipamorelin take to kick in?

In the main human pharmacokinetic study, growth hormone peaked about 40 minutes after IV infusion started. That's the fastest measurable effect. Under-the-skin injections likely take somewhat longer to absorb. Noticeable changes people describe, such as sleep quality, are subjective and not well studied. Ipamorelin is not FDA-approved.

Why does ipamorelin have a short half-life?

Ipamorelin is a small, five-amino-acid peptide without the fatty-acid tail or protein-binding tricks used in long-acting drugs. Small peptides tend to be cleared quickly by the kidneys and broken down by enzymes. Long-acting analogs like CJC-1295 with DAC were engineered specifically to avoid that fast clearance.

Is ipamorelin half-life longer than sermorelin?

Yes, by published estimates. Ipamorelin's reported half-life is about 2 hours, while sermorelin's is generally described in minutes. Both are still considered short-acting compared with CJC-1295 with DAC, which lasts days. A shorter half-life doesn't make one better; it changes the pattern of the growth hormone signal.

How many half-lives until ipamorelin is out of your body?

Pharmacology uses about five half-lives as a rough point where most of a drug is cleared. With a 2-hour half-life, that's roughly 10 hours. Real-world clearance can differ with route, dose, age, and kidney function. The 2-hour value itself comes from an IV study in healthy men.

Does ipamorelin build up in the body with daily use?

With a 2-hour half-life, very little should carry over from one day to the next. Drugs with half-lives of days, like CJC-1295 with DAC, accumulate far more. That said, formal multi-week human data on ipamorelin are limited, so accumulation hasn't been fully characterized in people.
